JCAHO Proposes Risky Changes to Anesthesia Policy:
JCAHO is proposing a revision of the Anesthesia Standard. There are 2 proposed changes. One is to remove the requirement that a licensed independent practitioner (LIP) be involved AT ALL during the performance of surgery and sedation or anesthesia [PC.13.20]. The other change is to remove the requirement for involvement of an LIP in the planning of sedation or anesthesia [EP.11].
These changes are out for public response in the JCAHO Field Review process. We need all your help! Please participate in this field review. A subgroup of the ASA QMDA Committee has prepared a draft set of responses, or use your own.
The information can be found at the ASA website home page under What's New. Pass this on to appropriate individuals - we need lots of representation.
